Gearbox and transmission repair

Automatic gearboxes give warning before they fail. If yours is slipping, jerking or stuck in limp mode, get it checked before a small fault becomes a big bill.

Signs your gearbox needs attention

Slipping (revs rise but the car does not pull), harsh or delayed gear changes, a jolt when selecting Drive or Reverse, whining or humming that changes with speed, a burning smell, red or brown fluid under the car, or a warning message and the car locked in one gear (limp mode).

How we work on gearboxes

We start with a scan of the gearbox control unit and a road test, then check the fluid level and condition. Some faults are electrical, such as a sensor or a valve body solenoid, and can be fixed without removing the gearbox.

When the fault is mechanical, the gearbox comes out of the car, as in the photos here, so the clutch packs, torque converter, seals and valve body can be inspected and repaired.

Gearbox fluid

Many modern automatics are sold as "filled for life", but the fluid still ages, especially in hot stop-start traffic. A fluid and filter service at a sensible interval is one of the best ways to protect an expensive gearbox. Always use the fluid your car maker specifies.

Common questions

Why does my car jerk when changing gear?

Common causes are old or low gearbox fluid, a faulty solenoid or valve body, worn clutch packs, or software that needs adaptation. A scan and road test narrows it down.

Can I keep driving in limp mode?

Only gently and only to a workshop. Limp mode protects the gearbox from further damage; driving on as normal can turn a small fault into a full rebuild.

Do automatic gearboxes need fluid changes?

Yes, even many sold as "filled for life" benefit from a fluid and filter change, particularly in hot stop-start driving. Use the fluid your car maker specifies.
